2017 Prius Prime Wins Kelley Blue Book Best Buys of 2017: Electric/Hybrid Car

2017 Prius Prime

The latest Prius Plug-In Hybrid – the 2017 Prius Prime – has some admirers in the industry. Recently, Kelley Blue Book named the 2017 Prius Prime (a new naming convention for the PHEV models) the best buy in the hybrid/electric class.

In particular, KBB said the Prius Prime’s simplicity in use – you can plug it into a standard wall outlet – and its cost effectiveness makes this a Best Buy for 2017. Each year, the awards find the best buys in 12 categories based on price, cost to operate, and ultimately, resale value.

Simply put, KBB said the Prius Prime, which features a 22-mile all-electric range and 120 MPGe, did well in all three categories. Firstly, the PHEV performance shaves down operating costs to a bare minimum, and secondly, the Prius Prime is available at a relatively affordable price point.

Yet, this award is just one reason to be excited about the 2017 Prius Prime. With its suite of advanced technologies, and improved PHEV systems, the Prime breaks new ground for the Prius line-up.

Ease-of-use – That’s a main reason KBB gave the 2017 Prius Prime top marks. Compared to other PHEV vehicles, which require access to a 240V outlet, the Prius Prime is much more user friendly. The 2017 Prime plugs into standard three-prong home outlets, and its 8.8-kWh battery – which is double the capacity of its predecessors – can recharge in 5.5 hours off a standard outlet. With 240V outlets, the battery can charge in half the time (about 2.5 hours).

All Prius Prime models also draw power from a 1.8L four-cylinder engine and an electric-drive system. A newly introduced Hybrid Synergy Drive system can utilize power from both motors in EV mode, and Toyota says this configuration has the ability to improve acceleration. Overall, with a full-charge and full tank of gas, the Prius Prime has a 600+ mile range, according to Toyota estimates.

2017 Prius Prime: Impressive Styling Inside and Out

Of course, the powertrain certainly is creating excitement. But Toyota has also done a lot to restyle and create a new profile for the Prius. You’ll see that upfront. The 2017 Prius Prime features a completely redesigned front-end with a blacked out grille area and LED headlamps.

Overall, the 2017 Prius Prime retains its dramatic sloping roofline and aerodynamics. Toyota says the Prius Prime has a drag coefficient of 0.24 – one of the best in the industry and a reason the Prime is so efficient.

Inside, the Prius Prime packs in all the bells and whistles. An available 11.6-inch tablet-style infotainment system tops the center console. In addition to advanced infotainment, the 2017 Prius Prime is also available with the Safety Sense P suit, which includes features like:

  • Pre-collision detection
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Auto braking
  • Lane-keeping assistance
  • Automatic high beams

Features like blind spot monitoring and cross-traffic alerts are available as options. Comfort options like the 8-way sliding driver’s seat, premium stereo options, and improved rear leg- and head-room make this one of the most comfortable versions of the Prius to date.
